Scandinavian Shop introduces
"1999 Mother's Day Plate"

1999 Mother's Day Plate

The Mother's Day Plate from Bing & Grøndahl has been issued every year since 1969. A classic collectors series with the motif executed in relief created this year by the artist Finn Clausen. The plate is hand-decorated in the famous cobalt blue underglaze color which is known around the world today as "Copenhagen Blue". Each plate is signed on the reverse by the artist who decorated it.

The tradition of Mother's Day originated as a tribute to the American woman, Anna Reeves Jarvis. She was married to a Methodist priest and they had 11 children together. For more than 30 years she made unremiiting efforts to estoblish and maintain a local association where mothers met to discuss politics and exchange life experiences. After her death in 1906 one of her doughters arranged a memorial commemoration in honor of her mother's work for charity. The day was fixed as the Sunday after the day of her death - the second Sunday in May. The memorial commemoration was marked by elegant flower arrangements and later developed into the tradition of giving the family's mother a bouquet of flowers on Mother's Day.

It is hereby cerified that the Mother's Day Plate entitled "Rabbit" has been produced and issued by the Bing & Grøndchl porcelain factory in 1999. This plate is no. 31 in the series and has been produced in a limited edition. The original mold will be destroyed at the end of the year rendering any future producton impossible. The motif appears in relief and the plate has been hand decorated on the finest parcelain in blue underglaze colors. As a guarantee of the authenticity of the Mother's Day Plate, it has been signed an the reverse by the painter and marked with the Bing & Grøndahl hallmark of three towers.

Welcome to Royal Copenhagen

It is with great pleasure and pride that we present this year's collectible offerings from four of Scandinavia's most famous names in decorative artware: the porcelain factories of Royal Copenhagen and Bing & Grøndahl and the Georg Jensen Silver-smithy.

Three world-famous names, whose products are manufactured, many by hand, based on distinguished traditions of craftsmanship and artistry which has been developed and refined to perfection over several generations.

We offer a wide variety of collectibles ranging from plates to figurines, bells and ornaments - all perfect gifts. One collector series has been in production for more than 100 years, while three others are being introduced for the first time this year!

We are especially proud to present to you the new series "Children's Christmas Plate"! We hope that you will enjoy them all.

History of Denmark's First Porcelain Factory

Royal Copenhagen was founded under the patronage of the Dowager Queen Juliane Marie in 1775. Its trademark stands for the three Danish waterways, Øresund, Lillebælt and Storebælt. Many of the factory's earliest services and figurines were created for the Royal Family as gifts to other Royal courts. Many famous artists have helped to preserve the high standards of artistry and craftsmanship which have made Royal Copenhagen and its hallmark famous all over the world! A tradition that lives on today, more than two hundred years after foundation.
